Cinema Style Popcorn

There's something so thrilling about popping your own corn... The anticipation before the popping starts, the excitement when it does, the trepidation as it starts to die down and you dare yourself to open the lid... popcorn is fun and if you're going to make it, you might as well go big and make it the tastiest you've ever had!

Essentially, you can't go wrong with butter, syrup and brown sugar but the secret to this recipe is actually the slight hint of salt that brings out all of the flavour and keeps you going back for more. Feel like you're in the cinema but in the comfort of your own home - what's not to love!?

Cinema Style Popcorn

80g popping corn
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp golden syrup
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp oil (not needed if you’re using the microwave)

Pop your corn. Either in the microwave or on the hob.

For the microwave, put the corn in a large bowl covered with three layers of clingfilm. Pierce the top a couple of times with a sharp knife. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. If the majority of the corn still isn't popped at this stage, carefully shake the bowl and microwave for a further minute or so.

For the hob, put your oil into a large saucepan and use a piece of kitchen towel to rub it around the inside of the pan. Put the corn into the saucepan and put the lid on. Place the pan onto a medium/high heat, shaking occasionally to stop the corn sticking. Once the pan is hot enough the corn will start to pop, leave it on the heat until the popping sounds have died down to about 1 every second. As soon as the corn has popped remove the pan from the heat and pour the popcorn into a large bowl (it’s important not to leave the corn in the pan as the residual heat will cause it to burn).

While the corn is popping, put all of the ingredients into a large saucepan over a low heat. Stir the mixture until the butter and sugar have melted and all ingredients are fully combined. Turn off the heat and tip in the popped corn. Stir until the popcorn is coated in the sauce then put into a bowl and enjoy!
