Scrumptious Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies

I'm a huge fan of the sweet and salty combination (I'm a big lover of eating salted crisps and chocolate in the same mouthful - don't knock it til you've tried it!) and so I set about creating a cookie which incorporated my two loves, since pretty much everyone likes a good biscuit!

It's a relatively well known fact that salt brings out the flavour of chocolate and most chefs will add a hint to their desserts, seasoning them just like you would a main course. After a bit of experimentation, I found that the best way to get a salt hit was simply to top the cookies with flaked sea salt and voila!

Scrumptious Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies

350g plain flour
1 tsp table salt
1/4 tsp baking soda
225g butter, softened
150g caster sugar
130g dark brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
80ml milk
150g good quality chocolate chips
Flaked sea salt, to taste

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and line two baking sheets with greaseproof paper.

Whisk the granulated sugar, brown sugar and butter until thoroughly combined and creamy smooth. Add in the milk and vanilla extract and lightly whisk again until combined.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt and then gradually add this into the butter mixture, stirring all the while. You could whisk, but I always end up with flour everywhere, and I figure my arms could do with the work out!

When the flour is incorporated, add in the chocolate chips and give it another stir to make sure they're evenly dispersed. Cover and chill until ready to use.

Roll the cookie dough into balls, about the size of golfballs, and place them onto the baking sheet leaving a good amount of space between them (about 2-3 inches). Lightly press the cookies down slightly, the pop the trays in the oven for 15 minutes or until golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool. Repeat in batches like this until you have used up all the dough.

Allow to cool slightly before topping with a sprinkling of flaked sea salt on each cookie. Enjoy!
